In this video my dad shows me my Oma’s Famous German Beef Stew Recipe, we wanted to document this for family and so that it’s as easy as possible for other’s to follow. Most of this recipe is done by eye without exact measurements but I think you will get the picture. I did my best to outline the ingredients and directions below. This version is served with Spaetzle noodles and green beans. If you give it a try please comment down below!

*Pair with:*
Spaetzle Noodles or any Noodle or Mashed Potatoes
Peas or Green Beans or veggie side of your choice….

*Ingredients:*
4lbs of stewing beef (or beef + pork or + venison works too)
2-3 onions
2 ½ Tbsp Vegetable Oil
Salt
Pepper
Maggi Seasoning
Water
4 Heaping Tbsp Flour
Kitchen Bouquet
1-2 Tbsp Paprika
3 Vlasic Pickles

*Directions:*
1. Cut 4lb of meat into ¾” cubes
2. Cut 2-3 onions into ¼” slices halved
– (looking for a 50/50 ratio of onions to beef)
3. Add 2 ½ Tbsp vegetable oil to stewing pot on medium heat
4. Once oil is rippling/smoking toss meat in to brown on medium/high heat
5. Salt and Pepper Meat + Stir, add a little more…
6. Add Maggi Seasoning to meat, 2 big splashes and stir in
7. Add onions to meat mixture, looking for that 50/50 ratio
8. Cook onions and meat, uncovered, at medium high heat, stirring occasionally until water is gone and meat is sticking to the bottom of the pan (30-45 minutes)
9. As water is cooking down, add a little more salt and pepper, and another splash of Maggi
10. As its starting to cook down and stick to bottom of pan, use spatula to scrape excess from bottom
11. Let it brown another 5 minutes don’t let it burn
12. Add water to meat, want about 1” over meat (almost 6 traditional 8oz cups)
13. Stir, make sure it’s enough water for a good amount of gravy
14. Make sure everything is scraped up from the bottom
15. Bring water to a boil
16. Turn down to low to simmer
17. Add another splash of Maggi, stir well
18. Cover, while slightly leaving open to release heat, let simmer (30-45 minutes)
19. Combine 4 heaping Tbsp of flour with cold water, get all the lumps out for milkshake consistency
20. Slowly pour about half flour mixture into stew while mixing
21. Stir and let sit for a few minutes then add the rest of flour mixture as needed
22. Stir well
23. Add 1 – 2 Splashes of Kitchen Bouquet & Stir
24. Add 1 – 2 Tbsp of Paprika & Stir well
25. Cover and let stew another 30-45 minutes
26. Cut 3-4 Whole Vlasic Pickles into quarter spears and slice
27. Add pickles to stew & stir
28. Simmer for another 30 minutes while you start your noodles or potatoes
29. Taste and add additional splash of Maggi as needed
30. Add pepper to taste & stir well

Finished! Total stewing time recommended was 1.5 – 3 hours the longer the better to tenderize the meat

*German Spaetzle Noodle Directions:* (check the package)
1. Bring water to a boil
2. Add noodles + 1 Tbsp of salt
3. Bring water back to boil
4. Set timer for 13 minutes

My favorite is served with peas!
