Come along and see how I make another Homestead favorite. Hearty Homestead Stew is not only made with ingredients straight from the farm, but from scratch. First we will give you the recipe for the stew mix which, in our humble opinion, is better than store bought. Plus its cheaper to make, and you know exactly what is in it. Sustainability is definitely a big part in the way we cook and grow vegetables. This is homesteading at its best.
Stew Seasoning Mix
1c Flour
2Tbs Fresh Dried Rosemary
2Tbs Fresh Dried Parsley, Chopped
2Tbs Fresh Dried Thyme
2 tsp Cayenne Pepper, Ground
2Tbs Garlic Powder
2Tbs Onion Powder
2Tbs Smoked Paprika Powder
2Tbs Oregano
2Tbs Fresh Dried Basil
2Tbs Celery Salt, Homemade (Dried Celery and Celtic Sea Salt ,4-1 ratio)
1Tbs Fresh Black Pepper
1Tbs White Pepper
1Tbs Himalayan Sea Salt
Mix ingredients together in bowl, then pour into Mason jar.
Use 4Tbs, heaping for 3lbs of meat, (Moose, Caribou, Deer, or Beef), and mix well. Add 4Tbs olive oil to a pan and brown coated meat. When done, add a small amount of water to get the yummies out and into the stew.
So we discussed how we make our stew, but I am leaving it to you to add what vegetables you prefer. Cook for 4 hours on high heat or 8 hours on low heat in the crock pot. Add 2Tbs corn starch to 2oz of cool water, stirring well to mix. Add to stew and cook an additional 20 minutes to thicken.
Now enjoy a Hearty Homestead Stew for the next 2-3 days. Yum!!
