Tempeh is so healthy and PACKED with plant-based protein, but it can taste bland if you don’t cook it the right way. These recipes are easy and some of my favorite ways to prepare tempeh as they are LOADED with flavor!
✅ Recipe no 1: VEGAN TEMPEH VEGETABLE STEW
2 x 227 g tempeh – cut in 1-inch cubes
2 yellow onions – chopped in large pieces
3 large carrots – chopped in large pieces
4 cloves of garlic – crushed
3 tbsp flour
2 tbsp refined coconut oil – solid
3 cups vegetable broth
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp vegan Worcestershire sauce
¼ tsp liquid smoke
2 bay leaves
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp salt – or to taste
8 oz mushrooms – sliced in half, to add halfway through cooking
Preheat the oven to 350º. In a small bowl, combine the flour with the coconut oil to create a thick paste. Set aside.
Warm up a large oven-safe pot with a little oil and then add the onions, carrots and tempeh. Stir and cook on medium-high heat for about 5-7 minutes or until browned. Then, add the garlic and stir while cooking for about 30-60 seconds.
Add the flour-coconut oil mixture and stir well to combine. Then, add the rest of the ingredients except for the mushrooms. Stir and cover, then transfer to the oven. Cook for 30 minutes.
Then, add the mushrooms and put back in the oven to cook for 30 more minutes (without the cover this time).
Take out of the oven and serve over mashed potatoes.

✅ Recipe no 2: BBQ TEMPEH
Slice the tempeh (I used 2 packages of 227g.) and cook in a large pan with a little oil on medium-high heat. Flip the pieces once in a while until browned.
Meanwhile, whisk in a bowl:
1 cup ketchup
4-6 tbsp maple syrup
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp soy sauce
2 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp onion powder
a few dashes of liquid smoke
Taste and adjust the flavor of the sauce to your preferences.
When the tempeh is golden brown, then turn down the heat and pour the sauce over (careful with the splashes…). Keep cooking on medium heat stirring/flipping often until the sauce thickens.
Serve with potatoes or other vegetables or use in sandwiches.
✅ Recipe no 3: RED CURRY TEMPEH BOWL
Warm up a large pan with a little oil and crumble the tempeh over in the pan (I used 2 packages of 227g.). Stir and cook on medium-high heat until golden brown.
Meanwhile, whisk together:
1/4 cup cashew butter
1/2-1 lime, juiced
2 tbsp red curry paste
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp sesame oil
+ a little water to reach a saucy consistency
When the tempeh crumbles look done, then add a few spoonfuls of the sauce just enough to coat the tempeh bites, remove from the heat.
Serve over rice with vegetables and leafy greens, then generously drizzle the sauce over.
