Today I am sharing another installment of my “Top 6 List” series. Only this time I am sharing my entire Pride of Szeged spice collection so there are actually 10 spices so that is where the “plus” comes into play. These are close to my heart. Having watched my Hungarian grandmother and my mom always reach for this delicious sweet Hungarian paprika all through my childhood it is just a touchstone that I am proud to keep in my own kitchen. I never knew there were so many other varieties that they offered until I went looking and I am going to share them with you today!
Once upon a time Pride of Szeged paprika both sweet and hot were staples of my grandmother and mother’s pantry. Always recognizable by it’s lithographed, brilliant red tin boasting a cathedral on the front as well as the colors of the Hungarian flag. Copious amounts were used in creamy chicken paprikash and sprinkled atop deviled eggs and other sumptuous dishes of my childhood. I never remember a time when it was not in my mother’s cabinet.
As an adult I had forgotten the iconic tin of paprika and when learning to make chicken paprikash my mother told me it was important to use Hungarian paprika she showed me her ancient tin and I went looking. Luckily I found it in a local grocery store next to a similar tin of the hot variety so I picked them both up. Then I went looking online. To my surprise I found that Pride of Szeged offered many different tins of spices and I went wild!
As you can see, I have every variety they now offer with the exception of some new releases that at the time of this filming I did not have, but to have them on their way to me. So my collection will be growing. Their chicken, beef, fish and rib rub are delicious and I reach for them often. The single spices I purchased because of the tin. I refill those from bulk spices I buy locally. The tin is so nostalgic and beautiful that I love seeing them lined up on the top of my stove. The spices I purchases several years ago all came in beautiful lithographed tins with easily removable lids. Making them easy to refill. I now buy the rubs in bulk and refill my tins.
Sadly, they no longer offer metal tins and have changed their packaging to a plastic box with a flip top lid that is not “refillable friendly”. This does not make the spice blends any less delicious. However You could easily purchase them in larger quantities and simply put them in a mason jar if you like. As I said, the old fashioned tin gets me every time!
I have all that they offer, including the chicken, fish, rib and steak rub along with some of the best pizza seasoning I have had. Garlic, cinnamon, cinnamon sugar are only for looks but sweet and hot paprika are true to the packaging in my kitchen. I only use this brand when cooking. The hot paprika is not smoked it is more like a cayenne.
We love the chicken rub so much I buy a gallon at a time. I also share with my mom who has also fallen in love with it! We use it for all things chicken and pork. It has a lovely combination of spices and even though I make my own spice blends, I would never attempt to replicate these because they are that good.
I buy my Pride of Szeged spices from Columbia Spice Company online: www.columbiaspice.com
I hope you have enjoyed a look at my Pride of Szeged spice collection. I highly recommend any of them that you would want to give a try! They are simply amazing!
