Out camping on the ranch for a change of pace and to keep an eye on a new friend freshly introduced to our extended four legged family. New horses can be tricky, as with people, when they don’t like eachother. They can sometimes hurt themselves badly. The new horse ( dark one ) was very moody and insecure and in the end it did not work out. A few days ago we had to trade it for a new one named Mango Tango. Very nice horse and most important, it got on well with the rest of us. For me, there are few things as peaceful and relaxing as watching horses just graze. Maybe you will feel relaxed too. The mask on the horse is a see trough mosquito and fly mesh to protect the eyes from infection.
On this trip I make some beef jerky bushcraft style. I built the fire pit with extra stones, not so much to protect the fire but more for the added heat. I find that adding extra stones to a hot campfire, causes the stones to absorb and emanate heat, creating a steady upward draft of warm air to the drying rack. That together with a smoky low fire and many hours of drying makes great jerky. I don’t cover the tripod with leaves for making this small amount of jerky but if I was drying larger amounts of meat I would. I dried the meat long enough to preserve it for a week or so but that was hopeful thinking. It came out so delicious that by the second hour after I pulled it off the rack it was all gone. If you can’t make a fire where you live, you can make this on your oven as well in very slow heat. Not the same smoky flavor but its good as well. Thanks for watching – Ric
